An iPod Touch Explodes Unexpectedly
by Jody Mitoma on March 13, 2008 at 4:23 pm
Max S. informs Engadget that he’s gone through a rough experience of having his iPod Touch explode while sitting on his desk.
Apple associates are replacing Max’s burnt Touch with a brand new Touch, along-side a $50 gift certificate to the Apple Store.
My concern around all this is, how does Apple know that Max didn’t accidentally (or purposely) burn his iPod Touch by having some sort of heating device on, under, or near his iPod? This may have been Max’s fault entirely. I don’t see why the iPod would explode otherwise. This is the first we hear of something like this, and the iPod Touch has been available for many, many months now. There’s really no way to tell. Anyway, glad to hear you got compensation for the iPod, Max.
Continue reading for an additional photo of the exploding iPod.
Please, do let us know if this happens to any more of you.

It’s the first we’ve heard of a Touch doing this, but not the first iPod. Heck, just a week or two ago we had the story of spontaneously-combusting 2G Nano. I doubt it was Max’s fault; that’s some serious heat that has to be produced to burn an LCD like that, and LiIon batteries have been known to do just that. (Remember the assploding Dell laptop a year or so ago?)
It’s good that he’s getting a replacement.

Scaaaarrrry, especially since I keep my IPT either in my front pants pocket, or in my left breast pocket when I’m not using it. Either way, such a “mishap” could be VERY painful….

i think this Max S. guy did it on perpose because i dont see how an ipod could just explode eather he put it in the sun or something because they do have warnings when you get the ipod saying it should stay in a curtain tempature!!! so it most likely his fault and he could have gotten the warenty because that would ahve helped a lot to

Well, i dont think that it was his fault, cuz my ipod touch randomly stopped working. and since its out of the one year warranty i decided to open it up. And what did i find, a black burn on the bottom near the dock connector. The green board is black with a tiny hole, the metal around it is black and the plastic the was above it was burnt through, and my touch wont turn on, my computer wont recognize it or anything. so idk what to do.

It has been over a year since this story was filed and there have been several more reported cases along with most stories mentioning DOZENS of cases filed with the US Product Safety Commission and most reported cases stating Apple’s position of having the consumer accept a Non-Disclosure Agreement as part of their acceptance of a refund, which under US consumer laws are REQUIRED.
Is this the new business model for consumers? The product you purchase may injure or kill you, but to get compensation you have to “hush it up”? I think Apple needs to do some good PR such as voluntarily recalling all 1st Gen Ipod Touch and Iphone models and replacing them with the newest models.
Sure it will cost a pretty penny, but it would do a great deal in rehabilitating their currently dismal image with corporate bullying in regards to product safety and lack of support for independent Iphone software developers in regards to full disclosure of payments due to them.
Microsoft went down the road of “Our customers are just a different type of addict”. No business can shirk its customers and expect to continue to thrive, the masses may be slow to react but once they’ve started on a course it’s hard to change it.

This Also Happened To My iPod

my ipod touch didnt catch on fire but there is that big grey dot on it but the rest still works

The source of these explosive problems can be trace to a dysfunctional lithium ion battery. Just two days ago my brother had a similar experience with his 8G iTouch. He reported that the device became so increbidly hot that he could’ve cooked a hamburger on it. Lucky for him, it didn’t explode but of course it shit the bed. Steve Jobs is really going to have to change Apple’s gag order policy for replacing dangerously defective products. The world knows that he’s scumbag . . . a goddamn megarich scumbag at that.

my 15 year old daughter was in a change room in the mall. she put her ipod on the floor with the ear phones wrapped around it as usual. she opened the door to show me her dress an poof, her ipod blew up right next to her. the smoke was thick and grey like a mini volcano. she burnt her hand and was in shock. this just happened yesterday, ipod 1st generation. i have gone to best buy where we bought it and they are going to contact apple. i will definitely be contacting apple myself. she sleeps with that ipod, what if it blew up in her face????? i would probably not believe the story if it hadn’t happened to us but it is true. they told me that apple had a recall on the battery but i did not recieve anything. someone has to take responsibility for this.
