SDKFinally, the iPhone / iPod Touch SDK is to be announced at the Cupertino Campus on March 6th. As many of you know the SDK has been on our minds for several days, especially with Apple taunting us with suspenseful delays of this release. Before I discuss what to expect with the SDK, I believe that a formal definition of a SDK is in order.

Definition: SDK is short for Software Development Kit and it’s basically a library of software that helps you develop applications and utilities. It will include an API or two, some utilities applications and probably an installer. There will also be extensive documentation and examples. (Cplus).

Example: Win 32 includes a SDK which is used to develop Window’s applications.

Common Questions:

Is the SDK available to be installed on my iPhone or iPod Touch?

No, the SDK is a software development kit, which is utilized on a desktop computer to create commercial (or private) applications.

Will I be able to utilize the SDK?

Yes, the SDK is open to the public. Keep in mind the SDK does not mean it will spoon feed you how to make an application. It is simply a tool that helps you develop applications for the iPhone or iPod Touch easier because it includes needed libraries and APIs.

What can I expect to come with the release of the SDK?

You can expect several larger companies such as Adobe to port some of their small scale applications to the iPhone or iPod Touch. There will be an increased amount of games available for the iPhone / iPod Touch, 3D and 2D. And finally, more complex applications will be released because of the SDK’s library to help developers.

Just to sum all this up, the SDK will be released on March 6th and there will be many more games and applications ported to the iPhone or iPod Touch.

Weird. That would make it an Apple Thursday. Not that I’m complaining, it’s just over a week away. Woohoo! I’m stoked. It’s going to be very interesting to see how this plays out — who they’ve got for launch partners (they’ve gotta have one or two) and what these new “enterprises features” will be. (And how much they’ll cost — you don’t think they’re just going to give those away…)

I think it will work very similar to a desktop computer’s applications. Trials and then you buy the serial.
