What Do YOU Want to See in the Next Firmware Release?
by Jody Mitoma on February 23, 2008 at 8:54 pm

I write for you all this evening, wondering what Apple has in stock for us in firmware release 1.1.4 (or whatever the next iPod Touch / iPhone firmware will be called). I truly do hope it comes with a couple newly-found features, this time not making iPod Touch users pay for any of the updates..
As anxious as we all are for the next firmware release - there is still no release date set in stone. Even then, since when can we trust corporations when they tell us something will be released on a certain day? month, even?… Apple in particular, has let us down several times in the past - most recently (as seen here) - with their SDK release.
Eric and I compiled a list together just minutes ago over instant messenger. Here’s what we would personally like to see added to the next firmware release. Keep in mind, we know that a lot of these will not happen - but one (or in this case, two) can dream, right?
Here’s our wishlist:
- FULL Flash support. (Not just in Safari)
- FM Radio (..and AM radio too. Why not?)
- The ability to copy to clipboard (a.k.a. Copy/Paste)
- Instant Messengers (if anything, Windows Live Messenger)
- Fully customizable springboard (Wallpapers, icons, battery image, etc.)
- Customizable EQ
- Shuttle controls in the mini-player.
- Java (JRE/JVM)
- Disk mode (ability to save files on the iPod Touch as if it were a thumb drive)
- Gestures to control music and videos (ex: swipe left/right for prev/next track, up/down for volume, tap to pause, etc.)
- Landscape support for Springboard
Now that you know what _we_ want, share with us what _you’d_ like to see in the next firmware release!
We’re anxious to hear what you’ve got!
Hell, we get over 50 responses and we’ll even send Apple an e-mail!

Everyting would be awsome that would make the ipod touch and the iphone almost invinsible so take down in the mp3 and phone market….but only if most of this stuff comes out with the next firmware.

looks like youve covered most of it to be honest.. maybe being able to change the colour of the font below the icons.. or something, kind of a small detail but it is useful with some white wallpapers/themes.. maybe developing the in-built speaker to do more than just a simple click click.

copy and paste like u said and something new like sync your iPod wirelessly(I tiink there is an app in installer) but that would be helpful for quick syncs to go

ipodtouchtoucher, yes, I do agree with you, an official way to wirelessly sync the ipod (non-jailbroken), would be rather useful.
By the way, this blog used to be hosted at the URL http://www.ipodtoucher.wordpress.com, hehe.

oops, i didn’t know that. and another cool feature would be put wallpapers as the background of your spring board like with jail breaking because the plain black is so, well, boring!
February 24th, 2008 at 5:49 pm
Yea, I already have that feature listed in the list above.

No need for an “oops”. It’s no worry.

ok I’m new to touch podium and even though this is off topic this site and ipodtouchfans are the bestestestest
but mostly this one cause it has a larger variety than just ipodtouch. Also I think a sometimes handy feature would be to be able to see what percent of battery you have at anytime not just when its at 10% and whatever. It would be helpful to me atleast.

lyric feature on music please!
February 25th, 2008 at 2:59 am
@ipodtouchtoucher - Thank you for the compliments. I’m glad you like it here.
@rkk - That feature was added to the 1.1.3 January update, and on all models that shipped with the 1.1.3 firmware.
February 25th, 2008 at 9:32 am
rkk, you get the lyrics via iTunes, sync your iPod, and then when you’re within the Music-Player on the iPod Touch itself, tap the Cover Image and you will be given the lyrics to the current-playing song.

ipodtouchtoucher - thanks a MILLION!
