Homebrew Hardware Hacks: Free Stylus and Dock

by Eric March on February 18, 2008 at 2:23 pm

Homebrew StylusCan’t afford a Pogo stylus? Don’t want the stock-white iPod dock? Got a creative streak you want to put to work? If you answered yes to any of these questions then I’ve got a couple of projects for you.

First off, iPod Touch Fans user Ejizzle4550 has devised a way to turn an ordinary pencil into a stylus you can use for Sketches or any other thing you might want to use it for. all you need is a pencil and a little bit of aluminum sealing tape. (If you don’t have any aluminum sealing tape handy, check your local dollar or hardware store; you can pick up a roll for a few bucks.) I would also recommend a screen protector, preferably an invisibleSHIELD or Best Skins Ever full-body skin to avoid scratches. From there, Ejizzle4550 give us simple directions on how to create it:

so, i was exploring different ideas of being able to have a stylus to make cooler drawings in sketches…heres my easiest way yet…get a pencil with a brand new eraser…wrap the pencil in aluminum foil tape for air duct sealing…then put a peice over the end of the eraser. Rub the eraser flat on a smooth surface.. it needs to be as flat as possible..it should work evertime, just make sure you write with the flat end of the pencil…

Nice work, guys. Now, you may be wondering about that dock-in-a-box in the second image there. Like it? Want to make it? Instructables has your tutorial.

Break out your Xacto knives and duct tape, folks, ‘cos it doesn’t get much cheaper or easier than this.
