Jailbreak Your 32 Gig Touch The WiFi Way

by Eric March on February 17, 2008 at 5:10 pm

Hell, yeah!UPDATE: This jailbreak method is now depreciated. Please see the article on ZiPhone 2.6 for the latest method of jailbreaking 1.1.3 and 1.1.4 devices.

Do I hear a collective groan? Surely I couldn’t be writing another 1.1.3 jailbreak article. Oh, no I di’int! Well, yes I did, but with good reason. Having just upgraded to a 32-gig iPod Touch yesterday, I was naturally looking for an easy way to jailbreak. My first instinct was to try ZiPhone, since it touted a complete 1.1.3 solution without having to downgrade. Unfortunately, that didn’t work so well; lots of 8-gig users reported that it worked fine, but success with 16-gig devices was spotty at best, with those who managed to get it working putting it down to pure luck. 32-gig users reported no success whatsoever. So, what now? I began to cast about for an easy solution and eventually settled on trying out the iJailbreakMobile method, which is based on ZiPhone but works on-board over WiFi, and will upgrade and jailbreak directly to 1.1.3 from 1.1.1. After a short while and a bit of trial-and-error, I had found my solution — one that worked consistently and almost effortlessly, and furthermore should, in theory, work on any iPod Touch from 8-gig to 32, with or without January app update, and even both 8 and 16-gig iPhones. This method does include the 1.1.3 apps.

Following are the steps I took. If you follow them to the letter, you should be able to jailbreak your Touch to 1.1.3 using the easiest method to date.

NOTE: You will need the 1.1.1 firmware restore file stored on your local hard drive. (download here from Apple)

STEP 1
Put your Touch into DFU mode: Connect your device to dock or cable, load iTunes if it doesn’t load automatically, hold SLEEP/WAKE + HOME until it turns off, then release SLEEP/WAKE but keep holding home for up to 15 seconds until iTunes recognizes your device is in restore mode. Your screen will still be off — there will be no “Connect to iTunes” graphic. This is normal and good. If iTunes detected your device in restore mode, it means you have successfully entered Device Firmware Upgrade (DFU) mode. On Windows, it may pop up with a “New hardware found” notification. This is okay too. Just let it do its business.

STEP 2
Dismiss iTunes’ restore notice. Hold shift (Mac users hold Option+Shift) while clicking on restore, then locate and double-click on the 1.1.1 restore ipsw (iPod1,1_1.1.1_3A110a_Restore.ipsw) file and let iTunes restore your Touch back to 1.1.1.

STEP 3
Once restored to 1.1.1, set up your iPod in iTunes (do not restore from backup, don’t sync anything.) Now load Safari and go to jailbreakme.com, scroll to the bottom and tap on “Install AppSnap.” You now have a 1.1.1 jailbroken 32-gig Touch.

STEP 4
Load Installer, let it refresh sources for the first time and dismiss the donation dialog. Tap on Sources and add ijailbreak.com/repo.plist to your sources. Let it refresh again. Now tap on Install, All Packages, scroll down to BSD Subsystem, and install it. Exit Installer, let the device respring, and then turn off your device (hold sleep+wake, slide to turn off, then turn on again). This step is important. The jailbreak may not work until you reboot this way.

STEP 5
Load Installer, tap on the Install tab, tap the iJailBreakMobile category, and tap on iJailBreakMobile 1.1.1. Install. Exit Installer and let it respring. Return to Springboard and tap on iJailBreakMobile. Now let it download and jailbreak. This process will take up to 45-minutes or longer depending on your Internet connection speed. The download may appear to stall from time to time, sometimes for minutes on end. This is annoying, but fine; just let it chug away, and it will eventually complete the download. After that it will proceed with the upgrade and jailbreak process.

STEP 6
If all went well, your device should reboot into 1.1.3 with the January update all functioning perfectly. Now there are two more things left to do: First, we need to remove the temp files put on your device by iJailBreakMobile. Load Installer, tap the Install tab, go back to the iJailBreakMobile category, and tap “Remove 1.1.3 Upgrade…” to remove the temp files. There is no program to download here; installing it will initiate the deletion process automatically. When it’s done just exit Installer and let it respring.

STEP 7
Finally, we need install the basics and fix the mail. First, go to Installer, click on All Packages, and install BSD Subsystem again. Next, go back to the iJailbreakMobile category and install “Fix Mail Passwords.” This will solve the password saving problem with the Mail app. Finally, install OpenSSH from Installer and you’re all set!

Congratulations! Barring any problems you should now have a fully jailbroken 32-gig iPod Touch with January Update apps and features intact. This has been by far the fastest, easiest, most stable 1.1.3 jailbreak for the iPod Touch that I’ve done — and I’ve done most of them. I didn’t even have to upgrade to 1.1.2, and iTunes recognized that I have the January apps so it isn’t bugging me to upgrade. (This is probably because my new Touch came with them, though.) Very impressive.

Thanks to Chris, ipodtouchhacker and ipodtouchmaster for the original wireless jailbreak, Arix for the on-board GUI, and of course Zibree for the ZiPhone jailbreak that this is based on. Feel free to visit the iJailbreak site for more in-depth information on this and the desktop version of this jailbreak.

  4. Chris said:

well, i think that you have got a couple of jailbreak methods confused. me, iPodtouchhacker, and iPodtouchmaster created the first computerless 1.1.3 soft update that pre-installed the January apps. Arix came along and made iJailbreak mobile, which provided a progress indicator and a GUI, then zibri has made an actual jailbreak that isn’t even related to the soft update. it just hurt my feelings that u listed my team mates and not me : ( lol jk

Great instructions – worked first time on my Touch 16.

However I had purchased the extra apps – Maps, Mail, etc. These icons no longer appear, and iTunes is coming up with an error each time it attempts to re-sync them. Any clues? Cheers.

is there any way to jailbreak my touch (16 gig) from 1.1.3?
    help would be appreciated

  12. Eric March said:

@B. Clarke – Glad it worked for you! I was concerned about it myself when I brought my 32 gig home, but once I tried this it worked beautifully.

@Rafael – it should work fine on a mac. This is the “No computer required” method that works completely over WiFi, so it doesn’t matter what platform you have. That’s the beauty of it. :)

@user needing help – The problem is that it’s trying to do a restore the normal way. What you need to do is put the device into DFU mode as described in Step 1. It _should_ still get picked up by iTunes as a device in restore mode, and you should be able to restore back to 1.1.1 using the ipsw file linked at the top of the article. Make sure to follow the directions exactly, ensuring that you do NOT get the “Connect to iTunes” graphic when you enter DFU mode — your screen should be completely blank. You must be connected to the computer through the USB cable or dock when you do this.

Confirmed working on 16GB touch. I had previously purchased the January upgrade software, and it didn’t come back upon the ijailbreakmobile step (step 4). There’s an option in the same section of installer to restore them, however. Do that before doing the mail fix.

Couldn’t find OpenSSH in the list of packages, however – guessing I’ll be needing that for something…

@john – Did you add ijailbreak.com/repo.plist to your sources? Make sure it it spelled correctly and exactly as it appears in Step 4, otherwise if there are any mistakes it will show up as an “uncategorized source” in the Installer sources list, and it won’t work.

arrrrrrrgh!!! do i have to do the whole thing again it doesnt say its jailbroken like the pictre at the top just got what i started with again this sucks,,, brian,erich-march if ur there

  26. Eric March said:

@john – I’m not sure I understand where it went wrong. iTunes shouldn’t be updating you back to 1.1.3 — in fact, iTunes shouldn’t even enter into the equation except to tell you when you’ve entered DFU mode in Step 1. (You can close iTunes after that.) Oh — and it won’t actually say “Jailbroken? Damn right!” — that’s just me playing with Photoshop there. :D

Just to be certain, yes, I would try doing it one more time, from scratch, following the steps above. (Do a full restore back to 1.1.3 in iTunes first)

And yes — you do need to keep the http:// in there when adding sources. I assumed in the article that everyone does this, but to make sure, yes, it’s needed.

  27. Ian K said:

    Hey,

Just a quick question – once i’ve followed the instructions, if for some reason I want to revert back to “out of the box” can I just connect to iTunes in Restore mode and restore back to 1.1.3?

    Thanks for your dedication!

  28. Jody Mitoma said:

Yep, you can revert to a non-jailbroken iPod Touch anytime… But trust me on this one – you’ll never want to. ;)

Once you’ve gone jailbroken – ya don’t wanna go back. :D

  29. Andy C said:

I completed the instructions; but when I was going to install OpenSSH, it was not in the list. Is there another way to get it?

  30. john said:

yeh i cant find it either

  31. mogz said:

    I went through this process…

I’m now on a JB 1.1.3 but why is it after waking up the screen is white (as if the brightness is turned all the way up)? It needs a poweroff and on again to return the screen back to normal… but if the sleep button is pressed it will happen again when the device is powered on again…

  32. mogz said:

    It’s a newly purchased (Valentine’s) 16GB btw…

Could it be apple is preventing the newer touch from being jb’ed?

  33. Eric March said:

@Andy/john – People have been having trouble with the repo that contains OpenSSH It’s been up and down lately, so be patient and it’ll reappear — there or on another repo.

@mogz – That’s a new one on me. It sounds like something else is going on there. Try a restore and go through the instructions again, just in case something got buggered up in the update/jailbreak process. It isn’t Apple though; this process has worked for loads of people.

    @Jody – I think that’s “Once you hack, you can’t go back.” :D

  41. Eric March said:

@mogz – I think there is definitely a problem there somehow; have you been able to successfully do a full, complete (erase-everything) restore to 1.1.3 with full functionality? And does it still do the white screen thing when you do Step 1?

  42. john said:

i still cant find the openssh catagory (step 7)or package what should i do, should i reboot and jailbreak again? not sure how to get more packages etc

    Thoughts?

    Thanks again

  49. Eric March said:

With regards to OpenSSH, I got it from the Ste Packaging repo, which is part of Community Sources. Make sure Community Sources are installed, and it should show up.

Just to be certain, make sure you have the new Ste Packaging repo address:

    http://psmxy.org.nyud.net/iphone-apps/repo.cache

Note also that OpenSSH is not absolutely necessary — only if you want to be able to SSH into your iPod to do manual installs or copy ROMs from your local hard drive or things like that. If you can’t find it or if the repo is down and it isn’t available, don’t sweat it; your JB’ed Touch will still work fine.

@mogz – That is definitely not normal. Do you by chance have an 8 or 16 gig iPod with the negative black problem? Not that this will offer any solution, I’m just thrown by this occurring only when you restore back to an earlier version.

@Ian – Unfortunately I just discovered that this is in fact a problem with this jailbreak method. DRM’ed music will not play. (This includes previews in the iTunes store app) This is apparently a problem with all soft-upgrade methods like this. The only true solution seems to be to wait for the real native Dev Team jailbreak, which should turn up in a week or two. Then all of this will be obsolete.

@Brandon – Thank you for the kind words!

@David Truhler – I am glad it worked out for you! The OpenSSH problem as I mentioned may be the lack of Community Sources being installed, or possibly the repo being down. Check above for the proper address to the repo, just in case it isn’t correct in your sources.

Hi, I’m having trouble with a fresh 1.1.3 16gb touch, with step 1.

I can’t seem to get into recovery mode without the connect to itunes graphic showing up :/

I’m following step one to the letter btw.

  51. Eric March said:

Okay, here’s something else to look forR:

    1. Connect the iPod to the computer with the USB cable.
    2. iTunes should open (if you have it set to open when the iPod is connected; if you have it set to manual, then load iTunes) iTunes should detect and show your iPod.
    3. Press and hold POWER+HOME until it resets and iTunes no longer shows your iPod.
    4. Release the POWER button, but keep HOME firmly pressed until iTunes shows your iPod again. That may take up to 15 seconds. Your iPod’s screen SHOULD remain blank after the reset, and iTunes should notify you that it has detected your iPod in restore mode.

Now you should now be able to proceed with the restore back to 1.1.1. Remember that if you release the HOME button at any time after the reset but before iTunes picks up your iPod in restore mode again, it will not work.

  52. Rafael said:

After installing OpenSSH it says” Your first login will take 30-35seconds, while the host keys are being generated” What does this mean? What do I have to do? Do I have to be connected to my mac.

  53. mogz said:

I don’t think so. My touch is pretty new got it on valentines.

Right now the screen is great so i dont think i have the negative black problem.

  54. Eric March said:

@Rafael – It means that the first time you connect to your Touch using whatever SFTP or SSH program you use. it may take up to 30-35 seconds to establish a connection because it has to create the host keys, which takes time. Once it has created the host keys it will connect instantly every time thereafter.

  55. Rafael said:

How can you put apps directly onto your ipod touch from your mac?

  56. Eric March said:

@Rafael – You have to SSH or SFTP into your iPod using whatever such program is available for the Mac (sorry, I don’t own a Mac so I don’t know) and then copy the entire <program>.app directory from the archive you downloaded into your /Applications directory, then set the permissions for the entire directory and all subdirectories to 755.

Im trying this method on my 16gb Touch. What is the last thing is says after you run the 1.1.3 from Home wich was downloaded from your source? Mine now says this at the end:

    inflating: /patch.sd3
    Patching filesystem…
^[[Bmount: /var: unkown special file or file system.
If you get a mount: /var: unkown special file or file system error, it is completely normal”

Im thinking its still doing something, or done. IDK please help. THANKS in advance!

  58. Kuni said:

what? is this jailbreak supposed to come with the Jan apps? i dont have them…..but i have 1.1.3 now. No apps…. o___O huh? is this normal for a 16gb touch jb?

  59. Giorgio said:

    hey Eric

fine job you did. i tried so many methods. yours the only one that worked for my 32gb! thx.

ps: in my case i took more than 1h!

  60. Jody Mitoma said:

Kuni, jailbreaking will not automatically give you the App Pack (Jan apps). You have to download those via repo/source. I’m not entirely sure what the source is – try Googling it. :)

Giorgio, glad to hear everything worked out for you. :)

1 hour eh? It personally, took me over 6 hours… Don’t even get Eric started — ;)

  61. Eric March said:

@Kuni – Perhaps it doesn’t include the January apps; it may be that they only show up if you already have the apps (purchased or came with the unit, as they did with the 32GB). In any case there are several repos that contain the 1.1.3 apps (ipodtouchmaster’s repo for one) so you shouldn’t have any problem finding them.

@Giorgio – I’m glad everything worked for you! Yes, this method worked flawlessly when I brought my 32-gig. I’d tried almost every other method out there with the 16-gig and they were all a pain in the butt and none of them worked quite right. This method is the only way that worked right and without any problems right from Step 1.

  62. Justin said:

The process didn’t work for me. Everything ran flawlessly and smoothly up until I ran the ijailbreak program. It downloaded and did its thing, but after coming to and respringing, it was still only 1.1.1.

Oh well, it was a nice try. Thanks, anyway!

So far, I think this method looks easiest and safest, but who knows?

I have heard the same thing Reid. Not too sure how to solve that problem, myself. Maybe Eric can give you some insight on that issue. Sorry!

Anil, yes it works. Just read the other comments left here! :)

This is – by far – the best way to jailbreak your iPod Touch to date. Most easy by far.

  66. Rafael said:

@Anil. Hey this jailbreak is very simple and works flawlessly. I am a fifteen year old and did this with some help from my macbook. Most of it is done through your wifi connection. Because I have a fast wifi signal, I managed to jailbreak my 32 gb ipod touch in just 30 minutes! It is easy to do and works perfectly. Well worth it! Once you hack it you won’t want to go back.

  67. Eric March said:

@Anil – It is definitely the easiest jailbreak method I have used. It’s perfectly safe — it is not without its certain issues, but it is by no means unsafe unless you have DRM-protected music. (See below)

@Reid Penny – Unfortunately it is true that this jailbreak, as with all soft-update method, breaks DRM-protected playback, so if you have any DRM-protected songs, they will not play. (This includes song previews in the iTunes store app). There is no jailbreak solution yet that will fix this other than ZiPhone, but that only works reliably on 8gb machines. One way around that though is to strip the DRM from your protected music using doubleTwist. Then you don’t have to worry about it ever again.

Problem resolved with IPHUC v 0.91. Also, after finishing downloading and proccesing data (ijailbreak 1.1.1 to 1.1.3) ipod do not restart alone (after 1h I pushed home button and ipod restart’s with v1.1.3)

    Thanks in advance =)

  70. Jody Mitoma said:

Anil, we’ve planned to make a Tutorials page on Touch Podium for a while.

I think I will get started on that right now for you, mate. :)

Besides, we’re running Touch Podium for you guys, so keep the suggestions coming!

    Take care for now, folks.

  71. hiflyer said:

Eric, you instructions were excellent. For the folks who didn’t get the January apps, just go back to installer and under the ijailbreak, there you can get them along with fix the mail app. Also, what cured my “no DRM playing” was to go to settings, and do a reset all. Then turn OFF the ipod then turn it back on and let it reboot. Redo the settings and you should be in business.

Any ideas what to do from here??

    Thanks,

    Mike

  78. Eric March said:

@MR Confused – You’re clicking restore twice, the first with the shift-restore method and picking the 1.1.1 firmware file, then the second time without shift, which simply restores it from within iTunes to the latest firmware (1.1.3, now 1.1.4). You only need to do the shift-restore method, not the second restore; once it is restored to 1.1.1, proceed to step 3.

@M0E – The link to download 1.1.1 is at the top, right before Step 1.

@Alex – That was what I found, too; the only real way to get iTunes to stop throwing that Error (1) was to put it right into DFU mode; then iTunes had nothing to complain about. I’m glad it worked out for you!

@Mike – It sounds like maybe something went sideways during the download process. Try repeating it from Step 1 again and see if it has the same result.

Can u use same method to downgrade a 1.1.4 to 1.1.1?

  82. Eric March said:

@t1879 – 7.6 and above is required for 1.1.3, so you should be fine.

@jrsanta – The problem with previewing songs in iTunes (and playing DRM content) is a known issue and is a problem with all soft-update methods unfortunately. OpenSSH is available on multiple repos, however first make sure that you have the most recent address for the Ste Packaging repo in your sources (http://repo.smxy.org/iphone-apps/). It should work fine.

@Golteb – Yes, DFU mode should work with all of the latest firmware versions to downgrade to any other firmware version.

@t1879 – Are you absolutely sure your Touch is in DFU mode, and not simple restore mode? In other words, is your screen blank and iTunes has recognized that your device is in restore mode?

    @Eric March – TY dude.

Another thing & it is quite trivial, but am no techie here. How do u fix the problem of your touch where the date & time keeps on going backwards like 3 months back when u plug into USB. Somehow itunes syncs it & I dont know where itunes gets the date from. I already disabled auto sync of ipods in itunes.

It seems that you need to time when you release the sleep/wake button while still holding down the home button. If you don’t release the sleep/wake button while the screen is still turned off, you won’t get it. I managed to time it by listening to my Macbooks harddrive activity! When holding both buttons, the MB drive gave a tick and I released the sleep/wake button. It worked!

I have a 32gb touch and managed to get to the first part of step 5 before I ran into trouble.
After installing iJailBreakMobile 1.1.1. I am supposed to ran iJailBreakMobile from springboard. Firstly on my touch it is just “iJailbeak” not “iJailbreakmobile” so am I in the right place or have I already stuffed it up.
If i tap “iJailbreak” it goes into a terminal like program and tries to download from apple but after many tries in which I can’t tell if anything is actually happening, it keeps coming up with the same text and and a new try, it turns off and i have set never to the autolock.

Any help would be very much appreciated

  94. Eric March said:

@All – I apologize for taking so long to respond. The newswires have been buzzing non-stop the last few days and I’ve got an enormously full plate of news to post, so I haven’t been paying a lot of attention to the comments.

@Garth – You should be fine. When it’s downloading it should show a status line showing how much has been downloaded. It may stall from time to time — it did for me anyway — but if it isn’t going at all after a long period of time, I’d restore and try it at some other time perhaps, as maybe Apple’s server is having trouble. You’re on the right track though.

@bebexangel – No, don’t upgrade, at least not until there’s a foolproof jailbreak for 1.1.4, which should be coming out soon. Stick with 1.1.3 for now.

@Justin g – You have to hold SHIFT when you click RESTORE, otherwise it will automatically restore from iTunes, which will put the latest firmware on your Touch.

@Golteb – No, it will not install them if you didn’t already have them. They are available in Installer however. I have no idea about the date problem though — that’s the first time I’ve ever heard that one.

@Evr – Did the jailbreak appear to go okay, or were there errors anywhere?

@calikorban – Is your device in restore mode (Connect to iTunes graphic displayed on your Touch) or DFU mode (screen is blank)? It must be in DFU mode for it to work.

@t1879 – Yes, as far as I know it’s possible to downgrade from 1.1.4 following the same steps.

@Carl Jensen – I’m glad to hear it worked! There may be a point at which you’re holding it down too long; I’ve never gone that far. This is why I load iTunes and connect the Touch; when iTunes recognizes my device in restore mode I know I can let go.

    Any reason why?

And when will there be a fix to this?

didn’t see all of it but something flashed up on the screen very quickly then rebooted. Couldn’t read most of it but it did say couldn’t find file. Rebooted back to 1.1.1.

  102. Eric March said:

@Justin g – Whoops! My apologies — you are correct. Being on the PC end of things I tend to think solely in terms of PC functions. Thank you for the correction.

@Rachel – DRM’ed music will not play, unfortunately. (This includes previews in the iTunes store app) This is apparently a problem with all soft-upgrade methods like this. The only true solution seems to be to wait for the real native Dev Team jailbreak, which should turn up pretty soon, now that all this SDK business is out of the way. Then all of this will be obsolete.

@Garth – I’m not sure why it shouldn’t be able to connect; that is the official Apple download server for firmware files. Perhaps your WiFi connection is getting dropped?

@Mike – OpenSSH is available on several different repositories, but first make sure you have the correct and current address for the Ste Packaging repo: http://repo.smxy.org/iphone-apps/

Great instructions, worked on the first try!

One thing I noticed, in iTunes (MacOS 10.5) I needed to press option-shift when clicking the restore button, just pressing shift did not give an option to select the firmware version.

  106. Eric March said:

@Plz help – It shouldn’t take that long, no. For some it took maybe 20-30 minutes. Me, it took about 45 minutes, and for some as long as an hour, but that variability was mostly due to the download time. The actual jailbreaking does take a while, but 2 hours tells me something’s gone south.

@D an G – Are you able to put the device into DFU mode? (Not restore mode, full-blown DFU mode, with the blank screen and all.)

@Brian – Yes, that was recently pointed out to me. I should really change that in the article. Thanks! And I’m glad it worked out for you.

  107. Dan G said:

(i’m not the only one who has this problem…many others who have bought itouch recently have it)
and yes, i can enter full blown dfu mode :P …i can also restore to 1.1.3 and 1.1.4, through itunes and through my harddrive… but it doesnt allow 1.1.1 or 1.1.2…. =(

  112. bc said:

I confirm this method works well and is easy to follow -I managed to jailbreak my brand new 32GB Touch on the first attempt following the instructions (on a Mac with iTunes 7.6).

however, using this method the iPod will no longer play DRM’ed music, either purchased music or even the free preview samples in the iTunes store.

to fix this, I started again from scratch (restored to official 1.1.3) and then used the jailbreak method described here:
    http://rupertgee.wordpress.com/2008/02/08/jailbreak-113-official-gui/

though not as simple as the wi-fi method described here, it’s really not too hard – the instructions are very clear, and it leaves iTunes able to correctly play any music files and previews on a jailbroken v1.1.3 iPod Touch.

anyhow thanks for the excellent site, I enjoy reading touchpodium frequently

@Golteb – I’m glad it worked out for you! SSH is for both iPhone and iPod Touch. It lets you FTP or SSH into your device to manually install or copy things over. If you are running out of application space, install BossTool and move your fonts and applications folder. That will move everything over to your music partition and give you tons more space (assuming you have space on your music partition).

    2) Which method would I use in reference to Qn 1: the method in step 1 or the one here http://ijailbreak.com/unbrick.html both of which describe it a little differently (one says nothing appears on the screen, the other one says a “connect to itunes” will appear).

    3) If I want to “unjailbreak” my ipod, I just restore it using the restore button on itunes? the DRM songs should be able to play as per normal then right?

@Faux – 1) Yes, you can restore back to factory-fresh at any point. This option is always available since it’s built-in to the device. 2) If the “Connect to iTunes” graphic comes on, then you’re in restore mode. If the screen does not come on at all, you are in DFU mode. DFU mode is kind of like an unconditional restore mode that works at all times. (Apparently it may not work with devices that ship with Firmware 1.1.4 though). 3) Yes, same a 1), you can restore at any time to turn everything back to the way it was when you bought it.

@Slaz – No, you do not have to be connected to iTunes by cable as long as you have a WiFi connection.

@Alberto – I’m glad you found the tutorial helpful. :) Yeah, sometimes I don’t know where Steve’s head is; there’s so much potential in these here devices and Steve only wants to show off half of it.

@Justin – If need be, you can create a cheap, ad-hoc WiFi setup on your PC or Mac using just a WiFi dongle, which you can pick up for $20-30 or so. Of course, you could probably pick up a cheap WiFi router for around that price too.

@Rich – Glad it all worked out!

@Ben – Glad to hear it! Yeah, sometimes mysterious dropouts or timeouts can throw a wrench into the works unexpectedly. Sometimes it helps to try again just in case something somewhere down the pipe went south. The method should work just fine so long as everything else cooperates. :)

@Shannon – Excellent! You are very welcome.

@Max – The January apps will only show up if your Touch came with them in the first place — and of course, only once it’s upgraded and jailbroken to 1.1.3. Once again, it’s possible something went sideways during the procedure; stuff like that can happen sometimes. Try restoring back to factory-fresh and trying again to see if you end up with the same results. If it’s consistently having trouble at the same spot then it’s probably something that can be nailed down more definitively.

@Me – Could be a number of reasons. Might be high server load or a flaky WiFi connection. Keep trying, I’m sure it will eventually work itself out. Sometimes this stuff happens for no readily apparent reason.

Some stuff that surprised me…Despite down grading to 1.1.3, my Apple apps remained (Mail, Maps, etc). Also, I have no trouble syncing and playing DRM protected music or video from the iTunes store. Cool!

I was anxious to use VNSea, but overall have found that Telekinesis (which can be used on a non jailbroken Touch) is even better, and will VNC in a fashion, as well as stream over the network.

Hi, guys, i have a qusetion not about Jailbreak though, but about songs that I’m dowload in to the my 32gb itouch. 10gb of space, why I’m getting only 865 songs, it does not get more songs like what they say, for instance 1gb can store up to 250 songs, any ideas, thanks

  147. Eric March said:

@t1879: The idea that X songs can fit in Y space is rubbish. That assumes that the songs are a certain average length (Apple uses 4 minutes) and encoded in a specific format at a specific bit rate (Apple uses 128kb/s AAC). The stuff I have on my iPod doesn’t even come close to that. If I had to guess I’d say that the average song length in my library is about 6 minutes, and I never encode at 128kb anything if I can help it. Wherever possible my music is at least 160kb/s MP3, and more often 192kb/s and above. So the number of songs I can fit is nowhere near Apple’s average. My average song size is 7.37MB. I’m sure if I converted them all to 128kb/s AAC I could fit a lot more songs on my Touch. But I’m not going to.

@George – What firmware version did your Touch come with? I am hearing reports that Touches that came with firmware 1.1.4 are having problems with this jailbreak method. However, you might want to try the new version of ZiPhone, I understand it works on all the latest firmware versions and works _much_ better than this method.

ok i tried your method but my 16gb ipod touch just doesn’t seem to want to accept jailbreak, what can i do? hasn’t someone come up with simple installer via itunes or just windows. i don’t want to go the ziphone way, heard it causes “problems”; i don’t need problems… i’ve upgraded to 1.1.4 and then down to 1.1.1 for some reason i can’t get to the home button only restore step … if i can’t get there and can’t restore my 1.1.1 to 1.1.1 and then go to safari while my ipod touch is connected … Whenever i try jailbreakme.com and click install appsnapp, it goes back to home screen instead of lock screen where normally (according to so many tutorials) it should automatically have the installer icon and be ready to use. Just not getting it… PLEASE HElP! i can read and do exactly as written but to no avail :(

This method was for jailbreaking 1.1.3 only (over a year old now), not 2.x. You need the Dev Team’s latest jailbreak for 2.2 (YellowSnow) and 2.2.1 (RedSnow).
